Mellie is currently employed by the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences as the Director of Delta AHEC (Area Health Education Center) South, located in the rural southeast Delta corner of the state of Arkansas. Her position involves providing continuing education to local hospitals, writing grants, managing health education and outreach programs, as well as serving as a program manager for the Greater Delta Alliance for Health, a non-profit coalition of six rural hospitals in four counties in southeast Arkansas.
Mellie has served on many local organizations and in many leadership roles. In 2006, she was appointed as a state commissioner on the Arkansas Rural Development Commission and currently serves as Chairman. She is committed to including the importance of maintaining our small, rural hospitals and rural healthcare in the future goals of the Commission.
Mellie’s educational background includes a BA in English Literature from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, a MS in Educational Leadership from Notre Dame University, and a MS in Recreational Administration from University of South Alabama. She has been a national and state speaker on networking and program development in rural communities.
Mellie has two daughters, Lillie and Camille, and spends most of her free time cheering them on at softball field or archery range.
